It sounds like the problems you're experiencing more specifically relate to
either of these two bug reports ("backlight off at startup"):

My suggestion is to try the new 'inverted-backlight' test PPA, but post your
results to bug 779166:

Important: Booting with the parameter "acpi_backlight=vendor" may also
be necessary -- see the inverted-backlight page above for details.
