@Brad - Compiz: I'm starting to think so too. My tests: Created a very simple embed-pdf-webpage. Loaded it in Firefox. Inline PDF. Good. Reloaded the page in firefox and evince pops up in a new window =??? With many many reloads, it seems entirely random.
2) Did "metacity --replace" to kill compiz and reloaded the test page MANY times. Always embedded. I'm thinking compiz here, too, cause of these tests.
