Confirming this for ipw2200 as of Feisty. Since I switched from WEP to WPA+WPA2 on my router, enabling SSID broadcast is the workaround I currently use.
Small workaround that worked for me before figuring this out: After logging in and entering the password for the keyring where the WPA passphrase is stored, I immediately disabled networking in NetworkManager applet (right-click on icon) and reenabled it again.
