Then I'm not sure, because this should work, could you please clearify: 1. Does this happen with all installations (including software center/synaptic/etc), or only installations through the terminal? 2. When typing your password in the terminal it will not show any stars or dots, however it should be registered. So just typing the password and pressing enter as usual should work.
