I got somewhat further. It seems to be not a kernel problem, because it
works on the command line:

aplay -D hdmi:CARD=PCH,DEV=0 /usr/share/sounds/ekiga/ring.wav

does not work, but

aplay -D hdmi:CARD=PCH,DEV=1 /usr/share/sounds/ekiga/ring.wav

plays the sound over HDMI .  :-)  DEV=1 is what's needed.


So the problem is not the linux kernel itself, it is that big heap of weird 
sound software (pulse, alsa, whatever) all around it, which I never really 
understood and which keeps changing with every ubuntu release, which causes 
trouble.
