Since the computer shuts down before the system is installed the above information might be useless. I managed to install ubuntu with the kernel options xforcevesa, nomodeset in the installer. I added the kernel options to /etc/default/grub, rebooted and then installed the FGLRX driver and removed the options from grub. I also installed Mint12 without any problems.
