This bug is actually dependent on bug #910536, where a non-working backlight in ACPI mode forces the user to boot the computer with kernel option "acpi=off".
If the computer is booted without "acpi=off" the STA driver works just fine. Is there a way to enable the wireless card when ACPI is off? I tried "sudo rfkill unblock 0" but it has no effect. ** Description changed: I just installed a fresh Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha1 (Precise) on two machines, one Acer Aspire Aspire 5736Z with Acer Nplify 802.11b/g/n (Broadcom BCM43225). $ lspci -vvnn | grep 14e4 04:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM43225 802.11b/g/n [14e4:4357] (rev 01) 05:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Broadcom Corporation NetLink BCM57780 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe [14e4:1692] (rev 01) By default (e.g. during the installation) there is no wireless available. After installation it is possible to run the Ubuntu - Restricted drivers tool to activate the Broacom BCM 43225 STA driver + Restricted drivers tool to activate the Broacom BCM 43225 STA driver. After that the wireless option in nm-applet appears, but it has the text "wireless is disabled by hardware switch". There is no true hardware switch on the laptop. However there is Fn+F3, but it does not enable the wireless. Dmesg shows: [ 1536.159290] atkbd serio0: Unknown key released (translated set 2, code 0x93 on isa0060/serio0). [ 1536.159293] atkbd serio0: Use 'setkeycodes e013 <keycode>' to make it known. Expected result: Wireless Broadcom STA driver should enable the "hardware" switch. - Workaround: - Remove the STA driver from the "Additional drivers" tool and install alternative Broadcom driver with "sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer" + Workaround: Boot computer with ACPI enabled. (This bug happens only if + booted with kernel option "acpi=off", which is needed on the computer to + make the screen work. Repeatability: - I also got the same error and symptoms installing Ubuntu 12.04 alpha1 on a HP G5050 laptop, which has a Broadcom BCM4311 wireless device. It too got fixed with the workaround described above. + I also got the same error and symptoms installing Ubuntu 12.04 alpha1 on a HP G5050 laptop, which has a Broadcom BCM4311 wireless device. There a workaround was to remove the STA driver from the "Additional drivers" tool and install alternative Broadcom driver with "sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer", but that does not work here since the bvm43225 is not a part of the b43 module. + ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 Package: broadcom-sta-source (not installed) ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.2.0-7.13-generic 3.2.0-rc7 Uname: Linux 3.2.0-7-generic i686 NonfreeKernelModules: wl ApportVersion: 1.90-0ubuntu1 Architecture: i386 Date: Sun Jan 1 16:03:01 2012 EcryptfsInUse: Yes InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS "Precise Pangolin" - Alpha i386 (20111129.1) ProcEnviron: - PATH=(custom, no user) - LANG=fi_FI.UTF-8 - SHELL=/bin/bash + PATH=(custom, no user) + LANG=fi_FI.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: broadcom-sta UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/910553 Title: Default Broadcom driver does not activate wireless, nm-applet says "wireless is disabled by hardware switch" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/broadcom-sta/+bug/910553/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
