I have the same problem on uptodate Xubuntu 11.04 on an Acer Aspire One (160GB HDD model)
Suspend was working fine, then suddenly I get the blank screen, still backlit, and no response from keyboard, only thing I can do is hold down the power button until it powers off. I don't get a suspend first time round either. Problem arises whether I use the logout screen or power button. Trying to hibernate from logout screen gives me a slightly different outcome, I also get a blinking cursor top left ;) The frozen task is khubd as with the OP. This happened previously and I resized my xubuntu partition and swap file (both running in a logical partition) which fixed suspend, but now the problem is back again. May try another resize and see what happens and report back.
