Public bug reported:

Two weeks ago emacs23 worked great for me. But at some point recently,
something changed so that emacs can't erase text. Instead it leaves it
there, so if (for example) you scroll your window up and down, then you
get a big pile of all your text together. Typing text in the middle of
the line makes all text to the right smear over. If all or part of the
emacs window is covered, the uncovered, then the newly uncovered part of
the window will look right until the next time that text must be moved
or erased.

I have tried changing fonts, and it doesn't help. I have attached a
screen shot taken with no .emacs file at all, so this is stock emacs
with no changes.

I have emacs23 23.3+1-1ubuntu4, which I believe is the newest version.
This is on an ia64 system. No other applications have trouble. I have an
Intel core I5 2nd generation CPU with the built in graphics. Running all
stock Ubuntu drivers, etc. Let me know if any more information is
needed.

** Affects: emacs23 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
