Building it from source is as easy as downloading the latest source tarball (2.1.7 is about to be released) and performing "sudo python setup.py install" in the extracted source directory. Since 11.10 is a point release, we will have to wait for the next 12.04 for getting this package updated.
Perhaps should you already push your demand in the development mailing list as a feature request.
