Another observation: when on Analog Headphones port extremely soft sound
can be heard through headphones. Using Ubuntu's default sound
configuration, setting the volume to the maximum (over 100%), the only
alert sound I can even notice from the Sound Effects tab is the Glass
sound, the others are too faint.

Output from: `lsb_release -rd`
Description: Ubuntu 11.10
Release: 11.10
Output from: `apt-cache policy alsa-base`
alsa-base:
Installed: 1.0.24+dfsg-0ubuntu2
Candidate: 1.0.24+dfsg-0ubuntu2
Version table:
*** 1.0.24+dfsg-0ubuntu2 0

Expected:
1) Plug-in headphones
2) Output switches automatically to 'Internal Audio Analog Stereo' port
'Analog Headphones'
3) Speakers are muted
4) Sound resumes on headphones
What happens:
1) Plug-in headphones
2) Output switches automatically to 'Internal Audio Analog Stereo' port
'Analog Headphones'
3) Speakers are muted
4) Headphones are muted as well!
Further notes:
* When switching back to the 'Analog Speakers' port sound works on the
headphones and speakers are muted.
* I have a second headphone socket which is marked as an S/PDIF output and
works on the PCM channel at `alsamixer`
* Setting Auto-Mute Mode in `alsamixer` to 'Disabled' prevents the automatic
switching (step 2) and lets sound play on both the speakers and headphones.
* When setting Auto-Mute Mode in `alsamixer` to 'Disabled' to have both
speakers and headphones output audio, the 'Headphone' and 'Speaker' channels
control both speaker and headphone volume and assumes the volume level of
whichever channel was changed last.
