my graphic card is also integrated, so it's not a ATI or Radeon issue.
Issue happens on both a Thinkpad T410 with Radeon discrete graphics and
on a Thinkpad X61T with intel integrated graphics.

In both cases I encounter the freezing/crash or gnome-shell becomes so
slow and unresponsive that only a restart of gnome-shell fixes the
problem.

I have tried everything. The very best scenario of just using terminal
and chrome and no other apps, I can avoid the crashes but like I said,
the gnome-shell starts slowing down and become slow to respond which
forces me to force a restart of the shell so I can get some work done.

I have decided to downgrade to either Mint 11 or one of the other Mint
flavours. For fun I tried giving a spin for Mint 11 LXDE and Mint 11
LMDE Xfce on two spare machines. Mint 12 is definitely the finniest
looking flavour/version, but the instability prevents Mint 12 from being
a real contender.
