Another possibility to test: On your 11.10 boxes download the Gutenprint package from OpenPrinting:
http://www.openprinting.org/driver/gutenprint Click the .deb package for your system's architecture and software- center will download and install it for you. After that change your print queues driver with system-config-printer (right-click icon, "Properties", "Change" button at "Make/Model". Choose the driver containing "OpenPrinting" in its name.
