Observations:

- gs-esp doesn't like this file. With gs = gs-esp, gs and gv displays a page
and then immediately blanks it; all but the last page.
- After installing gs-gpl and setting alternatives appropriately, gv displays
the PDF file (not generated PS file) just fine.
- Converting the PDF file to PostScript using gs (xpdf uses an internal
conversion facility), and then viewing the results in gv look just fine.
- The broken PS generated by xpdf appears to be using a just-slightly-larger
version of the same font. This is probably the source of the kerning errors, as
it is fairly typical for PDF files to specify absolute coordinates for
individual words. The words are slightly larger than they ought to be given the
originally-intended metrics, and thus they run together.

Given these observations, it seems fairly clear that the bug resides
with xpdf, rather than gs.
