Public bug reported:
Configuration:
Usual Xubuntu 11.10 64-bit desktop ISO file has been used. Installation using
all defaults.
To reproduce:
1) Install Xubuntu using all defaults. I selected English as programs language
because I prefer it (I really hate half-baked translations and all
langpacks-related stuff).
2) Check settings manager and all available XFCE plugins and panel items. Make
sure that there is no way to set-up keyboard layouts to use and no way to
switch layouts easily in user-friendly fashion. There is also no keyboard
layout indicator plugin available at all.
Result:
You can't change layouts switching settings easily in user friendly ways (I'm
preferring to use ctrl+shift to do this). You can't easily switch layounts (I
do not know default hotkey and I strongly prefer to use ctrl+shift). You can't
see current layout in some friendly indicator. In fact this makes system
vurtually unusable to users who needs to use more than 1 keyboard layout.
Expected:
At very least, Xubuntu should install xfce4-xkb-plugin package. It is small
and it does not does any harm. Ideally, it should be automatically put to
taskbar items if there are more than 1 keyboard layout specified. This plugin
also allows some basic settings on how I want to switch layouts and how to
indicate current layout, which is quite critical for users who need to use some
non-English layouts.
Solution:
I have installed xfce4-xkb-plugin manually. But I have a very little idea why
it hasn't been on CD and hasn't been installed by default by installer itself.
Other distributions and OSes do not have this stupid issue at all.
