I also have this problem with 11.10 on a Dell E6320 with Intel Advanced-N 6205. I was inspired to look for a solution based on the page referenced by comment #56, and the idea of #58.
To disable power management in Linux, you can do: iwconfig wlan0 power off I haven't done much testing yet, but I was able to see an immediate improvement when I did a successful rsync after this command, when beforehand it repeatedly stalled.
