The workaround is a pain in the behind, but it does work.
You use the binaries built with Sun compiler rather than the binaries
that are used in the Ubuntu repositories.
Go to the OpenOffice.org site and download the Linux version of suite
(it's a Red Hat version). Un-RPM it, and go through the whole nine yards
of installing the Debian version. This took about half an hour after the
download.

If you look at the discussion on bug 73395 you'll see that apparently
it's an issue that comes from the compiler used to build Ubuntu
binaries... it'll be fixed, but it will take far more time than most of
us would want to wait.
