If you run the below command, you can see some answers to your
questions. The gnome-core package includes what GNOME defines as "core",
and is maintained by the Debian GNOME team. If you don't like those
definitions, don't install gnome-core; it's not installed by default in
Ubuntu. You're welcome to use Debian if you like (gnome and gnome-core
are the metapackages Debian uses, relatively similar to what ubuntu-
desktop does for Ubuntu). Their version of gnome-shell is nearly the
same as Ubuntu's though. But like I said in my last message, I don't
know what your problem is. A clean install might be faster for you than
waiting for someone to fix whatever might not be working. Of course, we
definitely don't recommend someone reinstall every time something
doesn't work right. On the other hand, there isn't enough information
for me to really understand or replicate this bug. If you experience
this bug from a clean install and can give the steps to reproduce, that
would make this bug report more useful.
