Dave:
        OK.  I got into the default folder and found lock, but not .parents.  I
deleted lock, shutdown firefox, restarted ubuntu, and was able to launch
firefox w/o re-installing it.  When closing firefox and shutting down
ubuntu, I still get the message "A program is still running:
firefox-bin" which has below it buttons to "lock screen", "cancel", or
"shutdown anyway" - i.e., no change.

You have (or maybe just typed) The directory where both lock files are located 
wrong. Copy/paste these commands:
cd ~/.mozilla/firefox/
cd `ls | grep default`

Now you should be in the right directory.
