Started off with a clean install of 11.10 then upgraded through the dash
with "update-manager -d" to 12.04 to see if I could get rid of a
performance problem that I'll detail below.

For the most part normal operation of the system is fine, what I'm
observing could best be described as "stuttering" if I'm moving the
mouse I'l often notice that it freezes for a quarter of a second then
resume as normal, video playback suffers the same symptom.
