Do you have the nvidia or fglrx drivers installed? Or did you ever?
Did you by chance ever install them by hand (NOT using packaged .deb's)
?
They do muck with alternate libGL.so files in alternate paths, so I
wonder if something went crazy at some point from those drivers that
might not have been properly cleaned up.
