It was even simpler: I had big problems getting gnome to work for two
weeks and had experimentally switched to the "gnome shell" session that
uses the same icons - but no lenses. Since in the meantime unity changed
to version 3.5 I did think this was the reason causing the changes in
behavior. So all that is left is saying sorry to having bothered you and
to set the bug to "invalid".
