"That's OSS for you, don't get your hopes up." This bug and it's failure to be fixed is not representative of OSS. I've seen bugs fixed minutes after I've submitted a bug report. Several times.
That said I first found and reported this YEARS ago when using Hardy Heron. I find it amazing that a bug that potentially destroys users data, has been known about and lasted so long.
