With commit http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=ubuntu/ubuntu- oneiric.git;a=commit;h=e51fd951d1b30f4e8ca389be43f111891bd28af1 (in oneiric-updates), the kernel should no longer try to load unsupported firmware. The remaining issue seems to be that linux-firmware-nonfree ships the wrong firmware, correct?
