I think the problem why the fans are so noisy are based on various problems:
#1: radeon module fan control: https://bugs.launchpad.net/xserver-xorg-driver-ati/+bug/748080 #2: I think the basic power consumption of the laptop is quite high so the lost heat is quite high (I got about 68°C while I'm typing) and the fan need to do more work. So we need to have a look why the Windows version got abou 9 to 11 Watts in IDLE and under Ubuntu ist ab 18 Watts to get the thing quiet. I already found some possible Watt eaters: * It seems that the wifi card uses a huge amount of power. The dafult driver doesn't implement a power saving management (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/867869). You might use the propritary STA-driver which might have a better power consumption than the open source driver. As you can see the bug is open for already three month. I wouldn't expect a fix soon... * The power consumption on sandy brdige cpus might be optimized with setting some kernel options: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTAwNjU * PCIE_ASPM Problem (http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=linux_2638_aspm&num=3) * ... So I think it won't be easy to close the bug, because its it seems that there is not only one source for that problem. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/916621 Title: fan of 700Z3A is always noisy To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/916621/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
