I asked a friend, who is running Xubuntu feisty, to verify the behavior,
and found that he did not have this problem when he was running an older
version of screen (via an ssh session to another, Mandrake-based box). I
can't think of any way that the fact ssh was involved could effect the
behavior, so I'm guessing that it works with the older version of
screen. Would be worth verifying that (a) it works as expected in some
older version of screen (the version in this case would be 3.09.13), and
(b) it is broken with latest upstream (IOW, not an Ubuntu-specific
breakage).
