On updating today as follows:

 Upgraded the following packages:
 linux-generic (2.6.32.37.43) to 2.6.32.38.44
 linux-headers-generic (2.6.32.37.43) to 2.6.32.38.44
 linux-image-generic (2.6.32.37.43) to 2.6.32.38.44
 linux-libc-dev (2.6.32-37.81) to 2.6.32-38.83 
 
 Installed the following packages:
 linux-headers-2.6.32-38 (2.6.32-38.83)
 linux-headers-2.6.32-38-generic (2.6.32-38.83)
 linux-image-2.6.32-38-generic (2.6.32-38.83 

I lost the internet. The problem seems to be that the update doesn't use
the previously installed driver for the network card: RealTek RTL-8168
Gigabit Ethernet driver.

I currently have to boot to the previous kernel version to get internet
access.
