When importation fails and you can't save the connection, please see if there are any related errors in the file .xsession-errors in your home directory, as well as in /var/log/syslog. There should be something written out by either nm-applet (in .xsession-errors) or by NetworkManager itself (in /var/log/syslog) to explain the failure.
