Some more information: When the remote windows machine had done an update, it had rebooted. Now remote logging in from ubuntu, there was an EN to EN mapping, some of the keys worked as expected but not the ÅÖÄ types. But remote logging when the windows is already up and running causes more keys to function poorly :(
