Sorry, no. It's required that byobu's usr/bin/byobu* are in your path.
See the README:

 6) Update your PATH and BYOBU_PREFIX environment variables
      echo "export PATH=$HOME/byobu/bin:$PATH" >> $HOME/.bashrc
      . $HOME/.bashrc

Please do the same with your zsh. I'll can add an equivalent line for
zsh in the README, I suppose. But I'm not going to comprehensively
change all of Byobu's source code to use BYOBU_PREFIX for binaries that
are required to be in your path, per Byobu's installation instructions.

ssh -t example.com "su -c 'export BYOBU_PREFIX=/root/.dotfiles/oh-my-
zsh/plugins/byobu PATH=$PATH:$BYOBU_PREFIX/bin; $BYOBU_PREFIX/bin/byobu-
screen'"

** Changed in: byobu (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Won't Fix

** Changed in: byobu (Ubuntu)
