I can confirm this bug is also present using Ubuntu and Kubuntu 11.10
with a Samsung RV520 laptop. It seems like the brightness of the LCD
panel is changed using the graphic card, an Nvidia card in this case.

This driver allowed me to solve the problem:

https://github.com/guillaumezin/nvidiabl

It would be great if it could be integrated inside Ubuntu, without
having to install it apart.
