this is exacly what i am trying to figure out :)

filters are not a big issue since the drop down option can be set to
inactive (or disappear) in case some custom lens does not provide
filtering options.

the number of displayed icons is something that bugs me a little more, and i 
will sure try to figure out a fix for it.
one of the possible solutions i see is to make the dash auto-size its width 
based on the number of lenses installed, though i don't know if this is 
possible.
another idea could be to make the search box shrink according to the number of 
icons.

btw. it would be interesting to know how many custom lenses does the
average user install, just to figure out how much effort should be
thrown into this aspect.
