@kede: happened to me too one time, nor with Mint, just Ubuntu with
gnome-shell. The message was "gnome-shell respawining too fast".

By the way, you do not need to loose your work. Login in a virtual
console (ctrl-alt-F1, then login) and then issue:

unity --replace

(gnome shell has problems with X server permissions, but unity starts
ok). Then you go back to the graphic console, (alt-F7), save your work,
and logout from unity and log-in back to your preferred manager. Hope
this helps next time ;-)
