An interesting detail I did not pay attention to was that, although we see the "Xorg not tainted " message, running cat /proc/sys/kernel/tainted yields "128", i.e. "the system has died" flag. Not really sure what all this supposed to indicate. One thing is clear is that the kernel recovers pretty fast after that and the Xsession with its console dies completely.
