http://www.kubuntuforums.net/showthread.php?57044-Upgrading-11-10-to-12-04 recommended `sudo do-release-upgrade -f kde -d` , so I tried it. % sudo do-release-upgrade -f kde -d Checking for a new ubuntu release Get:1 Upgrade tool signature [198 B] Get:2 Upgrade tool [1410 kB] Fetched 1410 kB in 0s (0 B/s) authenticate 'precise.tar.gz' against 'precise.tar.gz.gpg' extracting 'precise.tar.gz' can't load kde (No module named kde) and the Gnome "Distribution Upgrade" UI appears.
