Public bug reported:

after upgrading from 11.04 to 11.10 no Unity appears nor desktop icons
or some other GUI info. I can get access to my files from the Terminal
w/o problems. I think the only solution in this case is reinstalling
from scratch instead trying to upgrade again from 11.04 to 11.10 ...
