Situation around Aegisub for Linux is getting worse - this is really important. If you care - please read whole message.
1. http://blog.aegisub.org/2012/02/219-released.html Aegisub 2.1.9 released with many fixes for Linux version (with more stable audio playback on Linux, Hi10P support, etc.) but developers doesn't provide binary for Linux: http://www.aegisub.org/ > Currently there are no plans to make prebuilt binaries for Linux systems > available. The reason is: > Q: Where are the Linux binaries > A: People actually used those? Those static binaries we offered for the 2.1.8 > release were a bit of a hassle to use, and it turned out they weren't very > flexible either. (In particular, because they were built with an older > version of wxWidgets, all menu bars suddenly disappeared when they were run > under Ubuntu with Unity.) 2. http://blog.aegisub.org/2012/02/bit-of-statistics.html Looks like developers really believe peoples use internal Aegisub update checker. Personally I doesn't understand how that may make sense since Linux users usually doesn't use update checkers in software, binary of Aegisub 2.1.8 doesn't work for Ubuntu 11.04 and Ubuntu 11.10 (both of binary from web-site and from Rickard Närström PPA), and the another important fact: new version is out around one time per year. So what we can do: > Currently there are no plans to make prebuilt binaries for Linux systems > available. These might get built if there is sufficient demand. Quote from http://www.aegisub.org/ > If there is enough demand we might try to make some new ones available, but > don't count on it. Ask your distribution's packagers to make some nice > packages, it should be quite possible now. Quote from http://blog.aegisub.org/2012/02/219-released.html As we see in case of Aegisub way "ask your distribution's packagers to make some nice packages" doesn't work. We wait already for three years now. We may ask Aegisub developers put binary build of Aegisub to official web-site (because they said "If there is enough demand we might try to make some new ones available" and "these might get built if there is sufficient demand."), or do something better - set up official Aegisub Team PPA on Launchpad with stable current version and unstable builds of next version. To cover other Linux distributions Open Build Service may be used. I propose to everyone who subscribed to this bug to contact with Aegisub developers and ask they provide better Linux support, at least on installation stage - binary for Linux, official PPA, packages for other distributions. Not many Linux users may come thru "compilation" this days so wrong decision of Aegisub developers will make Aegisub is unavailable for most of Aegisub Linux users. We all may change situation but only if YOU take action now! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/269324 Title: [needs-packaging] Aegisub - video subtitler To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/269324/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list [email protected] https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
