Why has this bug been changed to incomplete? I haven't had time to get
back about comment 6 and 9 but I did try those suggestions and no they
do not cause the device to show.

I should also mention that the instructions here:
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio/Log are incomplete, and/or broken. For
one, they don't mention that you need root privileges to kill pulse.
Following them (but adding sudo) made the applet disappear entirely
rather than only showing the HDMI audio. The applet is still missing
after several reboots, and I haven't had time to investigate why.

I'll change the bug back to confirmed since I have the issue on two
unrelated systems. If there are any other suggestions for tests I will
do my best to get around to them in a more timely manner, however I'm
far too busy at the moment to deal with the broken instructions at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio/Log .

For now I can do without the sound on this system, using other devices
when I have to video conference or something. But I sincerely hope this
issue is resolved by the release date since it's bound to affect more
users than just myself.

If it's helpful, both systems were upgrades from the LTS. (Ubuntu
10.04.) So it's possible this is a configuration issue of some kind.
