Yes this is reproducible. Every time i start empathy this happens (in one of my machines). There is no addicional step to do. The image shows exactly what happen, when the mouse pass over the contact the text becomes ilegible.
Bilal denying a bug will not make it go away. Empathy has a lot of bugs. In each machine i use it i find different ones.
