I am using Kubuntu Feisty, and I am having the exact same problem as
described by Ali Milis. Audio playback in Audacity fails 95% of the time
with the message:
"Error while opening the sound device. Please check the output device
settings and the project sample rate."
when it does work, it isn't because of anything I have done (ie. kill
artsd) The only way to get audacity to work 100% of the time is to
disable the KDE sound system. It doesn't seem to be a permissions
problem, because running audacity as root does not fix the problem.
