The log file you asked for is attached to this e-mail.
To make the issue appear again I have done :
steven@steven-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
[sudo] password for steven:
Please be sure to run "dpkg --configure lightdm".
steven@steven-desktop:~$ sudo dpkg --configure lightdm
dpkg : erreur de traitement de lightdm (--configure) :
le paquet lightdm est déjà installé et configuré
Des erreurs ont été rencontrées pendant l'exécution :
lightdm
Then I have rebooted my computer and as expected,
no login screen appeared.
I have rebooted my computer again in safe mode,
reboot (to be able to write on the hard drive) and netroot.
In console mode I have made a copy of the two log files attached.
Then I have done: sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm --> gdm
to have my login screen back.
I have to say that I don't use unity and that unity is not installed
on my machine (just: unity-greeter & maybe unity-place-files)
since I use xubuntu under xfce after migration from ubuntu
(I don't know if this information can help you).
