Would like to comment that I am having the same type of problem on my Dell latitude D820. Laptop has shut down twice preventatively due to overheating when lid was closed and put into my bag. on open the lid the screen if filled by a black background and a whit ascii character repeated inifinitely to fill the screen. Nothing seems to work except cutting power. hope you can help
