Using kubuntu - noticed the same apparently blank preview window. Apparently the controls are there 'cos clicking on where I think some of them are causes the anticipated effect. I.e. clicking in the bottom LH corner of an apparently blank preview window causes xsane to do a preview scan.
This may be unrelated, having scanned, the main viewer window then attempts to display the scanned image as a single column of pixels in the centre of window. This probably is unrelated.
