Here the same.

I did a fresh installation of Ubuntu 11.10 x64. After that I installed
xrdp. Then I installed all available updates. First attempts to login
with RDP from Windows 7 resulted a plain desktop background to show up.

After I changed resolution from Windows RDP to 1024x768 I was able to
see top menu (though missing some buttons from top-right corner) and
Desktop files but nothing more.

I then created .xsession file to my home folder and wrote there: gnome-
session --session=ubuntu-2d

and rebooted to get fresh RDP session (since I'm a bit noob with Linux
and did not know a way to force logout when there was no terminal and
menus visible. Ctrl+Alt+Del did not work though Windows RDP)

After this procedure I'm now able too see the left pane too. Though
there seems to be some icons missing (blank buttons which though do work
when pressed).

Hope this info helps to solve the problem. If needed, I can attach logs
etc.
