Knuthy: Because you used a 3rd party installer kernel mismatch problems are not uncommon (essentially two conflicting drivers have been installed simultaneously so have to find a way of disabling one of them). In hindsight this was probably more of a support request than a bug and you may have gotten a quicker and better response over on <https://answers.launchpad.net/questions>.
The following is a note to anyone else who might find this bug later: If you install 3rd party / non-Ubuntu drivers please be aware that your support options change and that any subsequent problems shouldn't be reported to bugs.launchpad.net but to whoever provided you the software or one of the places listed on http://www.ubuntu.com/support/communitysupport ). 3rd party drivers occasionally cause upgrade issues too so please be aware that they can cause as well as fix problems.
