Using strace I can see that gnome-settings-daemon is opening
/dev/snd/controlC0, instead of what I would expect to be
/dev/snd/controlC1...

open("/dev/snd/controlC0", O_RDONLY) = 25
open("/dev/snd/controlC0", O_RDWR) = 25
