Installing LightDM from scratch will result in an unbootable system.

This is because the default greeter - unity-greeter - (and maybe some
others, I haven't checked) actually needs gnome-settings-daemon to work.

However unity-greeter does not list gnome-settings-daemon as a
dependency, which it most-certainly should.

Following is the output of the command "dpkg-query -s unity-greeter",
which lists all of unity-greeter's dependencies.:

Package: unity-greeter
Status: install ok installed
Priority: optional
Section: x11

Architecture: i386
Version: 0.1.1-0ubuntu1
Provides: lightdm-greeter
Depends: libatk1.0-0 (>= 1.12.4), libc6 (>= 2.4), libcairo2 (>= 1.2.4),
libgdk-pixbuf2.0-0 (>= 2.22.0), libglib2.0-0 (>= 2.26.0), libgtk-3-0 (>=
3.0.0), libindicator3-6, liblightdm-gobject-1-0 (>= 0.9.2), libpango1.0-0 (>=
1.14.0), libx11-6
Recommends: lightdm
Conffiles:
 /etc/lightdm/unity-greeter.conf 06cfff7d4ffdd010b56ffc3cd10207ae
Description: Unity Greeter
 The greeter for the Unity desktop.
Homepage: https://launchpad.net/unity-greeter

How to replicate:

1) Install a working system from the Ubuntu repositories not including
gnome-settings-daemon. You can use the Ubuntu mini installer, but take
note of the following bug as well:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/775279

2) Install lightdm, which will pull in unity-greeter

3) Reboot the computer.

Suggestions:

The package dependencies can be updated, or alternatively, if possible,
remove the need for gnome-settings-daemon altogether, as this will allow
non-GNOME systems like Xfce to use the Unity greeter without needing to
install GNOME stuff, for example
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11439942&postcount=5 is an
example under which you may want the Unity greeter, but not the gnome-
settings-daemon - it doesn't control the settings in other desktops, but
takes up space. This is actually the case for GDM as well, it could be
noted, but LightDM is supposed to desktop-independent.
