I don't agree in general. There's no particular reason you need
unifont; you just need good Unicode coverage in your system's fonts,
which might well come from a variety of font packages. The GTK frontend
has no specific dependency on unifont.
Are you working with Ubuntu, or with a customised build of some kind?
Can you give specific examples of display problems?
