Thanks for your prompt response!  Fortunately, it looks like the current
version of update-manager for Dapper AMD64 does not have this bug.

I had hoped to upgrade to Edgy (and on to Feisty) from a pristine install
(the Edgy and Feisty install CDs won't boot on my system), but after
submitting the bug report, I did an apt-get update and upgrade.  I'm
currently in the middle of an update-manager -c upgrade to Edgy.  I'll only
be able to reproduce the bug if the upgrade goes poorly and I'm forced to
reinstall Dapper.

On a side note, it looks like update-manager will force me to restart my
system after the dist-upgrade.  The last time I upgraded to Edgy (shortly
after Edgy came out), there was about a 50% chance the system would crash
before giving me a login on any given boot.  It would be really nice if
there were a way to bypass the forced reboot and instead go right into a
dist-upgrade to Feisty.
