See bug 890661 - seems to be a similar problem with a somewhat better
description.  Please accept my apology if this is not the case.

Switch to the terminal (Ctrl + Alt + F6) and back (Ctrl + Alt + F7) to
see if it will give your display back.  Also, try waiting for up to 5
minutes for your display to show.  I would also suggest monitoring
system CPU during this time to find out if it is being 100% used and
which process is using it.
